Virgin Hyperloop One Joins GENIVI

Virgin Hyperloop One, a privately-held company reinventing transportation to eliminate barriers of time and distance, has joined the alliance to work with the robust GENIVI ecosystem to leverage our proven history in open source software collaboration. In the coming year, Virgin Hyperloop One plans on expanding its entire electronics and supplier ecosystem and will tap into the GENIVI community of open source-focused companies to assist in developing software quickly and cost-effectively.

With the mission of having operational commercial systems by 2021, Virgin Hyperloop One is rapidly ramping up engineering resources as they move from their project’s R&D phase to true product development. Becoming a GENIVI member provides Virgin Hyperloop One with an opportunity to adopt and extend their work and also interact with other GENIVI members to help accelerate their future systems.

Virgin Hyperloop One works with a number of existing forms of transportation and its efforts align well with current GENIVI connected vehicle and smart city initiatives as well as the recently announced GENIVI Vehicle Domain Interaction Strategy. The strategy was communicated during the recent All Member Meeting in Seoul.

GENIVI welcomes Virgin Hyperloop One and looks forward to their contributions toward reinventing the transportation experience.

Domain Interaction Technical Projects Underway

On 2 November, GENIVI kicked off the technical discussions related to the recently announced vehicle domain interaction strategy with two teleconferences to cover Asia, Europe and U.S. time zones. During the “Asia-friendly” teleconference, several organizations including Alpine, Bosch, LGE, Mentor, Mitsubishi Electric, Obigo, and Opensynergy joined others to hear about how GENIVI would manage the domain interaction projects and to identify next steps and logistics. Later in the day, HARMAN, KPIT, Luxoft, Mobica, Renesas, The Qt Company and Volvo Cars also joined and engaged in the discussion. As one can see by the turnout, this strategy is an important topic with many GENIVI members and likely to the broader automotive industry.

After laying a foundation of the purpose and context of the strategy, GENIVI technical leaders introduced the four priority projects identified during an earlier workshop:

  • Graphics Sharing & Distributed HMI Compositing
  • Developing or Extending Hypervisor APIs
  • Determining Preferred Generic Communication Protocols
  • User Input Distribution and Coordination.

Since then, GENIVI has launched two of the four projects. The first two Graphics Sharing and Distributed HMI Compositing project calls were held on 16 and 23 November with over 20 participants. The kick-off call for the Generic Communication Protocol project was held on 24 November with seven organizations participating.

As GENIVI gathers additional stakeholders, additional projects will be launched and any interested party is welcome to answer a brief online participation survey to register interest in the above four topics as well as to propose additional projects.

Note that upcoming meeting announcements for these projects will be held on the genivi-projects email list, which is open to the public. You can subscribe to the list here to receive project announcements and to participate in these projects. Any questions about these projects or related topics can be raised on the public email list.

Welcoming New Faces at the Seoul GENIVI Event

The GENIVI Alliance gathered its global community in Seoul, South Korea to celebrate its 17th All Member Meeting & Open Community Days. Between the political turmoil and distance for many Europe and U.S.-based members, some speculated that the event might be less attended. But this amazing event surprised even the most experienced attendees with a large crowd (369 confirmed attendees) comprised of GENIVI members and over 20 nonmember companies plus participation from a number of Korean universities.

The program content was special in a number of ways. Starting Tuesday afternoon, the member-only content focused strongly on the launch of the new GENIVI Vehicle Domain Interaction Strategy. During the member keynote, GENIVI President Schönenberg gave an introduction to the strategy noting that a more complete strategy presentation would be held later in the day and during a workshop held the next day.

The program also highlighted keynotes from Hyundai Motor and LGE as well as a number of talks about the future of IVI including a provocative panel by three GENIVI Board members discussing whether IVI was “done.” Technical program highlights were too numerous to mention and several long-standing GENIVI technical leaders expressed that the level of technical content was some of the best when compared to previous GENIVI events. Most of the session slides from all three days can be found here.

Twenty-four tables were filled during the GENIVI Showcase and Reception and the audience lingered well past the planned end time. Hyundai graciously provided two vehicles, a G80 Sport and a next generation Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle, both equipped with GENIVI-based head units. Conversations with several companies hosting tables resulted in a consistent theme that it was quite refreshing to have “new faces” to engage with from the South Korean and broader Asia audience. GENIVI is grateful for the sponsors of our All Member Meeting in Seoul: LG, Intel, Mentor, Renesas, HARMAN, Hortonworks, Irdeto, Renesas, Hyundai, Obigo and Mentor.

The next GENIVI event will be in Munich, Germany, 17-19 April 2018. This event will be followed with at least two technical summits in the fall 2018, one held in Asia and the other in the U.S. Stay tuned for more information on these summits.

Include GENIVI Events in Your 2018 Plans

For many, the remaining weeks of 2017 involve planning and budgeting for 2018 activities. GENIVI would like to make everyone aware of event plans for 2018 in hopes that your organization might consider participating in one or more of the alliance gatherings.

Starting in January, the GENIVI presence at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas will be even larger than before. More detail is available in an article below, but count on a larger GENIVI Showcase and Reception as GENIVI has secured a ballroom in the Bellagio for the evening of 9 January. No better targeted (and manageable) audience of IVI and connected vehicle buyers can be found during CES than at this showcase and reception. Participation details are below under “Upcoming Events.”

Fast-forwarding into April, GENIVI will hold its 18th All Member Meeting & Open Community Days in Munich, Germany. The dates were recently finalized for 17-19 April 2018, so please factor that into your planning. This will be a full-sized member meeting and open community days with a full showcase in one of the automotive “hotspots” worldwide.

In 2018, GENIVI will move to a regional summit approach for its fall member events. Recent discussions have narrowed the target locations for the Asia summit to Tokyo or Bangalore, India. The U.S.-summit will be in either Detroit-area or in Silicon Valley. These summits will be more technically focused and not have the showcase and business-level program typically held during a full member meeting. More information on the dates and venue will be communicated in the new year.

Finally, it is expected that GENIVI will continue to have significant presence at key industry events such as TU-Automotive Detroit, AutoMobility LA, and various other high-profile events to be determined.

Stay tuned to genivi.org and to future newsletters for more information on how to participate in 2018 GENIVI events.
