Second gunshot fired outside Viva's

The New Haven Police Department is investigating a shot fired Sunday night outside Viva Zapata on Park Street, the second incident of gun violence to occur outside the bar and restaurant in just eight days.

A single shot was fired outside of Viva’s just after 10:30 p.m., NHPD Press Liaison Officer David Hartman said. No one was injured in the incident and the NHPD has not yet identified a shooter.

Bake sale raises over $1,000 for Harvey victims

In the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, The Texas Society at Yale, in collaboration with other campus groups, continues to mobilize to provide support to those in affected areas.

On Friday, just one week after The Texas Society held its first fundraising event at Brother Jimmy’s BBQ, the student group held a bake sale, “Hearts for Houston,” to raise money for Harvey victims.

As of Sunday evening, the student group raised just over $1,000 through the cookie fundraiser, Elizondo said. The money raised will go to the Hurricane Harvey relief branch of the American Red Cross, as was the case with the first fundraising event.

Amidst BOE chaos, no NHPS superintendent

As the search for a permanent superintendent for New Haven Public Schools continues, the city’s school board remains without a seventh member, reflecting widespread internal strife among city education officials.

The Board of Education, which is tasked with choosing a new superintendent, currently comprises only six of the requisite seven members, some of whom have begun to miss meetings and, as such, prevent the board from reaching a quorum.

Uncontested Catalbasoglu ramps up campaign

Hacibey Catalbasoglu ’19, running unopposed in the upcoming November aldermanic election, is forging on with his campaign effort in the hopes of encouraging as many Ward 1 voters as possible to participate in the general election and local political discourse.

Catalbasoglu announced his bid for the Ward 1 alder seat back in April and has since held campaign events to promote his candidacy, such as a launch party at his family’s business Brick Oven Pizza.

CT budget crisis could spell disaster for city

The start of the 2017–18 academic year brought with it not just changes in student population and curricular offerings, but new options for dining as well. In anticipation of the opening of two new residential colleges and the closure of Commons, Yale Hospitality instituted a number of changes to facilitate dining hall traffic flow and offer lunch services during more hours of the day.

Looking for the best party on a Saturday night? The answer might be found in a phone, as Moves, a new, location-based app designed by three Yale students, seeks to help students navigate college nightlife around Yale and New Haven. Moves allows its user base, which is currently restricted to people with a Yale email address, to see where parties are being held on campus and how many other users of the app are attending.
